Possible Travelling Foot Pains
Exploring a different country on foot, whether in the tranquil early morning or during the enchanting twilight hours, offers a unique experience. However, this active exploration can come with challenges, particularly when navigating a city's cobblestone streets. Walking extensively can lead to foot pain, with common issues including plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy. These conditions are often caused by overuse, wearing inadequate footwear, or tight and weak muscles. Plantar fasciitis, for example, manifests as a sharp pain in the heel as a result of overburdening the feet. Achilles tendinopathy presents as pain in the lower leg and is often caused by tight calves and wearing unsupportive shoes. To prevent and treat these issues, it is suggested that prior to your trip, you make an appointment with a podiatrist to discuss options such as using custom-made orthotics and targeted stretching and strengthening exercises that may help you to avoid foot pain so you can enjoy your vacation

Winter sports can be fun for many – but only with the proper protective gear. Even with the right equipment, however, injuries can happen. If you’ve sustained foot or ankle trauma or a foot or ankle injury, we’re here to help.
Children’s Foot and Ankle Injuries
Children often experience foot and ankle injuries due to sports, games, or falls. These injuries can range in severity, requiring different levels of medical attention. Ankle sprains happen when ligaments in the ankle stretch or tear due to rapid movements, often occurring during sports or high-energy activities. This can lead to swelling, pain, and bruising. Ankle strains involve muscle overstretching or tearing, which can be acute or chronic. Severe strains need immediate medical attention. Sever's disease causes heel pain in growing children, worsening with high-impact activities. It generally resolves over time. Ankle fractures are common in sports, and may involve any ankle bone. Complex fractures may necessitate surgery. Other injuries like puncture wounds, compartment syndrome, and ankle dislocations can occur and should be promptly treated by a podiatrist. If your child has a foot or ankle injury, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and proper treatment.
The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact George Tellam, DPM of Ankle & Foot Associates. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
- Make sure their shoes fit properly
- Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
- Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
- Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
- Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
- Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
- Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
- Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Kidney Disease and Foot Ulcers
Kidney disease is a serious condition that can give rise to foot problems, primarily due to nerve and blood vessel damage. Two significant complications related to kidney disease and foot health are circulation issues and altered sensation. These changes can develop gradually, often without noticeable symptoms. One common foot problem associated with kidney complications is a foot ulcer, where the skin breaks down, exposing underlying tissue. Unfortunately, the skin's poor healing ability in some kidney disease patients makes them more susceptible to ulcers or infections, even from minor injuries. These foot ulcers can become infected, and if left untreated, may lead to severe complications, including an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. If you have kidney disease, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist to set up regular screenings and assessments to detect any potential issues early and create a personalized treatment plan.
When dealing with systemic disease of the feet, it is extremely important to check the affected areas routinely so that any additional problems are caught quickly. If you have any concerns about your feet and ankles contact George Tellam, DPM from Ankle & Foot Associates. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric needs.
Systemic Diseases of the Feet
Systemic diseases affect the whole body, and symptoms usually are displayed in the feet. This condition can make a patient’s ability to walk unbearable. Systemic diseases include gout, diabetes mellitus, neurological disorders, and arthritis.
Gout – is caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. Common symptoms include pain, inflammation, and redness at the metatarsal/phalangeal joint of the base big toe. Gout can be treated by NSAIDs to relieve pain and inflammation, and other drugs that lower the acid levels in the body.
Diabetes mellitus – is an increase in the level of blood sugar that the body cannot counteract with its own insulin. Failure to produce enough insulin is a factor in Diabetes.
Diabetes of the Feet
Diabetic Neuropathy – may lead to damaged nerves and affect the feet through numbness and loss of sensation.
Peripheral Vascular Disease – can restrict the blood flow to the feet, and often times lead to amputation of the feet.

Causes of Swelling in Feet and Ankles
Swelling in the feet and ankles, a common concern can be attributed to various factors rooted in the body's intricate balance. One primary cause is fluid retention, often associated with prolonged periods of standing or sitting, as gravity impedes the return of blood and fluids from the lower extremities. Injuries, such as sprains or fractures, can trigger swelling as the body responds to the trauma. Poor circulation, a result of conditions like peripheral artery disease, may contribute to fluid accumulation. Additionally, systemic issues such as heart, kidney, or liver diseases can manifest in swollen feet and ankles due to compromised fluid regulation. Hormonal changes, particularly in pregnancy, may also play a role. Lifestyle choices, including a diet high in sodium, can exacerbate fluid retention. If your feet and ankles have become swollen, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is and offer appropriate relief techniques.
Swollen feet can be a sign of an underlying condition. If you have any concerns, contact George Tellam, DPM of Ankle & Foot Associates. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
Swollen feet are a common ailment among pregnant women and people who stand or sit for extended periods. Aging may increase the possibility of swollen feet and patients who are obese often notice when their feet are swelling too. There may be medical reasons why swollen feet occur:
- Phlebitis - A condition that causes the veins to become inflamed and can also cause leg pain.
- Liver disease - This may lead to low blood levels of albumin which is a protein. This can cause fluid in the blood to pass into the tissues and several areas of the body can become swollen.
- Heart failure - When the heart doesn’t pump properly the blood that is normally pumped back to the heart can pool in the veins of the legs causing swollen feet.
- Kidney disease - One of the main functions of the kidneys is releasing excess fluid in the body. This type of condition can make it difficult for the kidneys to function properly, and as a result the feet may become swollen.
- Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT)- This is a serious condition where blood clots form in the veins of the legs. They can block the return of blood from the legs to the heart which may cause the feet to swell. It is important to be treated by a podiatrist if this condition is present.
Swollen feet can also be caused by bone and tendon conditions, including fractures, arthritis, and tendinitis. Additionally, there may be skin and toenail conditions and an infection may cause the feet to swell. Patients who take medicine to treat high blood pressure may be prone to getting swollen feet.
Many patients elevate their feet to help relieve the swelling and this is generally a temporary remedy. When a podiatrist is consulted the reason behind the swelling can be uncovered and subsequently treated.
