What Is a Haglund’s Deformity?

Haglund's deformity is a foot abnormality where the heel bone and soft tissues develop an enlarged bony section at the Achilles insertion, causing heel pain and swelling. It is linked to retrocalcaneal bursitis, often referred to as "pump bump" or "winter heel" due to pressure from pump-style shoes. This condition commonly affects runners and women aged 15 to 35, particularly those who wear high heels. Factors such as genetics, high arches, tight Achilles tendon, and walking on the outer heel edge contribute to its formation. Wearing tight or ill-fitting shoes also exacerbates the condition. Treatment ranges from anti-inflammatories to surgery to remove the bony protrusion. If you have a bump on the back of your heel that causes foot pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact George Tellam, DPM from Ankle & Foot Associates. Our doctor will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

Dealing With Blisters While Running

One of the main issues that runners face is dealing with blisters. These are bubbles of fluid that develop on the feet and toes as a result of friction between your socks or shoes and the skin. Blisters can develop from running long distances, breaking in new running shoes, or wearing shoes and socks that are unsuitable for the terrain or weather. While blisters are not a serious health threat, they can cause a great deal of pain and discomfort if not properly treated. It is never a good idea to pop a blister, because the open skin can easily become infected. The best ways to prevent blisters while running are to make sure your shoes fit properly and that your socks wick moisture away from the skin. Many runners tape their feet before a run as a preventative measure. Precautions taken before a run include breaking in a new pair of shoes as well as increasing mileage and intensity gradually. Others coat their feet and toes with petroleum jelly before starting. If you are a runner who has continued problems with blisters, or who has a blister that has become infected, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for help.

Blisters are prone to making everyday activities extremely uncomfortable. If your feet are hurting, contact George Tellam, DPM of Ankle & Foot Associates. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters develop as a result of constantly wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear. This happens due to the constant rubbing from the shoe, which can often lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

How Do Blisters Form?

Blisters on the feet are often the result of constant friction of skin and material, usually by shoe rubbing. Walking in sandals, boots, or shoes that don’t fit properly for long periods of time can result in a blister. Having consistent foot moisture and humidity can easily lead to blister formation.

Prevention & Treatment

It is important to properly care for the affected area in order to prevent infection and ease the pain. Do not lance the blister and use a Band-Aid to provide pain relief. Also, be sure to keep your feet dry and wear proper fitting shoes. If you see blood or pus in a blister, seek assistance from a podiatrist.

Effective Ankle Stretches

Many people enjoy exercising and performing stretches that can target specific areas of the body. Unfortunately, the ankles are often overlooked and are only noticed if an injury occurs. The ankles provide balance and mobility to the feet, and they must remain strong and flexible. This can be helpful in avoiding an injury, such as a sprained or broken ankle. Some stretches can stabilize the ankle joint, which may help to reduce the chances of incurring an injury. One effective stretch is called a soccer kick, which is done by standing with one foot in front of the other while lengthening one leg and tapping the toes forward. This is started with the arms above the head, and are brought down as the leg is elongated. Ankle pumps are also effective, and can be accomplished by standing with the legs apart while lifting up onto the balls of the feet, and repeating several times. If you would like to learn about additional methods of how to exercise the ankles, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can provide you with useful information.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact George Tellam, DPM from Ankle & Foot Associates. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Anyone with plantar fasciitis knows how much pain it can cause, and one of the ways to ease that pain is by using shoe inserts, or orthotics. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot. When this tissue is torn from overuse, it becomes inflamed and a stabbing pain is mostly felt in the heel and arch. One of the major causes of plantar fasciitis is improper footwear. It is especially common in runners and women who frequently wear high heels. Shoes should have the proper arch support as well as ample cushioning to absorb shock. Special orthotics may be helpful in this regard, particularly in people with flat feet, high arches, or other biomechanical foot conditions. In these cases, ready-made shoe inserts may not be able to solve the problem. Custom orthotics made by a podiatrist can be exceedingly helpful because they are constructed to fit the contours of your feet perfectly and correct the problem areas. For more information, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam.

If you are having discomfort in your feet and would like to try orthotics, contact George Tellam, DPM from Ankle & Foot Associates. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are Orthotics?

Orthotics are inserts you can place into your shoes to help with a variety of foot problems such as flat feet or foot pain. Orthotics provide relief and comfort for minor foot and heel pain but can’t correct serious biomechanical problems in your feet.

Over-the-Counter Inserts

Orthotics come in a wide variety of over-the-counter inserts that are used to treat foot pain, heel pain, and minor problems. For example, arch supports can be inserted into your shoes to help correct overarched or flat feet, while gel insoles are often used because they provide comfort and relief from foot and heel pain by alleviating pressure.

Prescription Orthotics

If over-the-counter inserts don’t work for you or if you have a more severe foot concern, it is possible to have your podiatrist prescribe custom orthotics. These high-quality inserts are designed to treat problems such as abnormal motion, plantar fasciitis, and severe forms of heel pain. They can even be used to help patients suffering from diabetes by treating foot ulcers and painful calluses and are usually molded to your feet individually, which allows them to provide full support and comfort.

If you are experiencing minor to severe foot or heel pain, it’s recommended to speak with your podiatrist about the possibilities of using orthotics. A podiatrist can determine which type of orthotic is right for you and allow you to take the first steps towards being pain-free.
